Recognise psychological problems

Many young people report psychological problems. In adolescence, depressive disorders, eating disorders, disturbances to social behaviour (e.g. playing truant, oppositional behaviour, not complying with requests, petty theft) and alcohol and drug problems particularly occur. It is unclear at this time whether young people with extreme obesity are more often prone to these types of problems. We have established, in one study, that extremely overweight young people report depressive episodes more frequently. These episodes are characterised by indifference, lack of enthusiasm, depressed moods and various further signs, such as for example insomnia, excessive eating with the weight increases connected with this, loss of appetite with the connected weight loss, lack of or excessive exercise, occasional thoughts of suicide and the feeling of being guilty/responsible. Many extremely overweight children are also apprehensive; they are wary of other people.

TALKING IS A GOOD START

If your child shows signs in this respect, you should try first of all to speak with your child about this. Possibly an appointment with a child and youth psychiatrist would be recommended. As regards to the weight problem, you should know that a proportion of the overweight young people have so-called eating attacks. These are characterised by the person concerned eating large amounts of food in a relatively short time and having a subjective feeling of not being able to control his/her eating habits. This means that the person concerned cannot stop eating, even if he/she would like to. Furthermore, those concerned frequently feel guilty and full of shame after one of these types of eating attacks. Eating attacks can be spread over a whole day. Frequently, they occur, however, in early or late hours of the evening. This form of eating disorder requires a specialised therapy and should be taken as a sign that your child needs help.
